Krysten Ritter Is “Thrilled” To Be Back As Jessica Jones & Says It Was “Torture” Holding The Marvel Secret For Two Years

Six years after her Marvel-produced Netflix series, “Jessica Jones,” was canceled, Krysten Ritter (“Breaking Bad”) is finally returning to the titular role of the sarcastic, potty-mouthed detective and street-level superhero. While she would not confirm when she will appear, Ritter recently filmed her Marvel return for “Daredevil: Born Again” season two, which will reunite her with Daredevil star Charlie Cox, and will likely premiere sometime in 2026.

By the time the show airs, it’ll have been seven years since the character graced the small screen, but in a recent Bingeworthy podcast conversation about “Dexter: Resurrections,” in which Ritter co-stars—whole conversation soon—the actress admitted she knew she would be returning to the Jessica Jones role about two years before it was announced.

“I’ve also known for so long, and keeping it a secret has been torture. I’d known for almost two years, and it’s a long time,” she said, pausing before repeating herself for emphasis. “A long time. It’s either been talked about, in the works, or some state for a long time. So, keeping that secret and keeping the enthusiasm and waiting until the [Marvel] upfronts to announce it, it was like, when it was finally out, I was like, ‘Oh my God!’ I’m always pretending I’m not in New York…keeping secrets because I get asked about it daily.”

“People ask me and I’m trying to figure out new ways to be like, ‘I don’t know. I hope so. We’ll see. I’m so excited. I hope so,” she continued, confessing to learning how to fib about it along the way. “And that’s all true. But yeah, I was like, ‘If it gets out, it’s not because of me, because I have kept the secret!’ It’s just really special and exciting. And the team is amazing, and I feel grateful.”

While Ritter hadn’t played the character in over half a decade, she said slipping back into the character and that world was effortless and straightforward.

“It felt crazy—like no time had passed,” she explained.” It felt celebratory; everybody was so excited. This is all due to fan demand. I really believe I’m back because the fans have been so vocal about Jessica and feeling so passionate about her. And I am so thrilled to be back in these iconic boots. This is a character that I love and means so much to me, and means so much to so many women and men. And the fact that she gets to come back in this huge way is a thrill. And it’s a really great team.

“I adore Charlie [Cox],” she continued. “We’re so close. We’re basically family at this point. We’ve known each other for over ten years. And it was exciting. I think the fans are going to be very excited. There are a lot of really cool stunts.”

Asked whether Ritter would want to mix it up with other Marvel Cinematic Universe characters or maintain her little corner of the street-level MCU, Ritter said she was open to all of it, but did hold a spot in her heart for her Hell’s Kitchen, New York City-level character origins.

“I think there are many opportunities for Jessica,” she explained. “I think that she’s a great way in. I think that she brings her own flavor and her own style. And I think that you could probably find her anywhere, but I do love the grounded street element. And what I’ve always loved about Jessica is how deeply personal it is.”

“It’s so character, personal history and backstory driven, she added. “And I love that. I also love when she gets to be sarcastic and funny and has that dry point of view. I think there’s just so much to this character. She’s so dynamic that it’s exciting to officially be in the MCU and be brought back in this big way. It’s amazing and wild; it’s really so rare that something like this happens. So, I’m thrilled that Marvel’s been so amazing and that the fans brought her back. I’m just over the moon about it.”

“Jessica Jones” ran for three seasons between 2015 and 2019. The actress also participated in the “Defenders” mini-series that featured all of the Netflix superhero stars, including Daredevil, Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist.
