“Stranger Things” may be over, but Maya Hawke‘s working relationship with Netflix appears to be far from over. Yesterday, the streamer announced that the actress will star in “The God Of The Woods,” a series adaptation of Liz Moore‘s bestselling novel from 2024. Expect the series to be part of Netflix’s 2027 TV slate.
As per a logline provided by Netflix, “The God Of The Woods” is “a multi-generational drama series set in the Adirondacks, exploring the Van Laar family’s dark secrets, class tensions, and the mysteries surrounding the disappearance of 13 year old Barbara Van Laar from her family’s summer camp—in the wake of an earlier family tragedy that may be related. As the past and present collide, the Van Laars’ wealth and influence unravel, revealing the damaging consequences of privilege and the abuse of power.”
Hawke will play Judy Luptack in the series, described as “smart and quietly determined, [and] the first female investigator in the male-dominated Bureau of Criminal Investigation, is assigned to unravel the disappearance of a young girl from a summer camp in upstate New York.” So, a reprise of Robin Buckley this is not. In fact, this sounds like one of the most serious roles of Hawke’s career, with shades of Jodie Foster‘s Clarice Starling in “The Silence Of The Lambs.”
“The God Of The Woods” is Hawke’s only major upcoming TV, but she has some big things on the way in terms of movies. Three features starring the actress should reach audiences in 2026: two rom-coms, “Wishful Thinking” and “One Night Only,” as well as the “Hunger Games” prequel “Sunrise On The Reaping,” in theaters on November 20.
“Mindhunter” alum Liz Hannah and Moore serve as co-showrunners, co-writers, and executive producers on “The God Of The Woods.” Other executive producers on the show include Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty via Original Film. The series is a Sony Pictures Television production.
As noted earlier, expect “The God Of The Woods” to premiere on Netflix in 2027.
