We’ve long known that Warner Bros. was planning some kind of remake/reboot of “Lethal Weapon” — along with a bunch of other titles in their catalog —and at one point “Gangster Squad” writer Will Beall was tapped to pen the script. And we basically haven’t heard anything in a few years, but today some fresh rumors suggest this thing is back in motion in a big way, honey.
According to The Tracking Board (so, proceed with much caution) says that Chris Hemsworth is being sought for a role in the film, with the plot reportedly rebooting things with an older cop’s son trying to join the police force. So maybe Riggs Jr? Who knows. But the site also suggests that creator Shane Black is back in the mix too offering his input as Beall gets the script in order, so there’s some logic there if it’s true. Even more, they add Justin Lin is attached to direct. And that’s fine, but that guy is attached to approximately five billion projects at the moment, not least of which is “Bourne 5” for Universal is already slated for release next summer. So, guess we’ll see.
The project is apparently titled “Lionhunters,” though we really don’t see WB returning to the “Lethal Weapon” brand and not using that name. So perhaps it’s a working or dummy title to throw people off the trail? Again, we’ll see. But with the remake of “Beverly Hills Cop” already set for 2016, we’re not surprised that WB wants to get their cop franchise going too.
Update 5/9: If Justin Lin is directing “Lethal Weapon,” it’s news to him…
Just got back to the states and saw that I’m directing Lethal Weapon and Fast7. Did I just land in an alternate universe?
