Sony‘s live-action “The Legend Of Zelda” movie remains shrouded in secrecy, from its plot to its casting of various characters. Now, according to Deadline, some of those mysteries have been revealed, at least on the casting side.
The biggest news there? It’s who plays the video game series antagonist, Ganondorf. Deadline reports that Australian actor Uli Latukefu will play the villain in Wes Ball‘s film. Other notable casting news includes Dichen Lachman, Yvonne Strahovsky, and the late, great Sam Neill in one of his final (if not the final) onscreen roles. Lachman plays Impa, bodyguard and advisor to Bo Bragason‘s Princess Zelda, while Strahovsky is in line for a queen character; Neill’s role remains currently unknown.
As noted earlier, the plot for Sony’s “Zelda” movie remains under wraps for now. Benjamin Evan Ainsworth and Bragason star in the film as hero Link and Zelda, respectively; their castings were first announced last July. This new casting announcement is the first since then, despite production of the film wrapping this past April. Sony and Nintendo first announced “The Legend Of Zelda” in November 2023, with Ball directing, Miyamoto and Avi Arad on board to produce, and T.S. Nowlin writing the script. One presumes the “Zelda” movie will adapt the gist of the video game series, as elfin Link seeks to rescue Princess Zelda and the magical land of Hyrule from warlord/deon king Ganon.
Speaking of Ganondorf, Latukefu’s casting in the role may be the biggest of the actor’s career. Perhaps best known stateside for playing a young Dwayne Johnson in the short-lived TV show “Young Rock,” other recent roles for Latukefu include Ti West‘s “MaXXXine” in 2024, and a central role in the Prime Video series “Countdown.”
Meanwhile, Neill sadly passed away earlier this summer on July 13. Other recent credits for the late actor beyond “Zelda” include “Apples Never Fall,” “Untamed,” and “The Twelve,” and the upcoming films “The Last Resort” and “Godzilla x Kong: Supernova.”
Lachman’s role on Apple TV‘s “Severance” as Ms. Casey is no doubt her most popular. She stars next in Universal‘s horror pic “Other Mommy,” in theaters on October 9.
Meanwhile, Strahovski has been nominated for several Emmys for her role on Hulu‘s “The Handmaid’s Tale.” Viewers will recognize the Australian actress in varied fare like “Dexter,” Shane Black‘s “The Predator,” and the Peacock horror series “Teacup.”
“The Legend Of Zelda” now arrives in theaters on April 30, 2027. Expect a teaser trailer for the film sometime this Fall.
