Sean Penn To Direct & Star In 'Flag Day' Opposite Josh Brolin, Miles Teller, And His Own Children

Over the years, Sean Penn has stayed very busy. He has a ton of credits over the decades, including stints as an actor in films, TV series, and on stage, as well as a director. And it appears that he’s got something special planned for his next project, as he is going to direct and star in the upcoming film “Flag Day.”

It was recently announced that Penn has signed on to helm and lead the cast in “Flag Day.” The synopsis for “Flag Day” is rather short: “Based on a true story, Flag Day is an illuminating portrait of a daughter struggling to overcome the loving yet dark legacy of her con-man father.” The film is based on Jennifer Vogel’s 2005 memoir “Flim-Flam Man: The True Story of My Father’s Counterfeit Life.”

“Flag Day” is written by Jez Butterworth, who is probably best known for his work on films like “Black Mass,” “Edge of Tomorrow,” and “Spectre.”

The film will star Sean Penn, Dylan Penn, Katheryn Winnick, Josh Brolin, Norbert Leo Butz, Dale Dickey, Eddie Marsan, Bailey Noble, Hopper Penn, and Miles Teller. Yes, those two Penns, Dylan and Harper, are related to the filmmaker. They’re his daughter and son, respectively. This makes “Flag Day” a bit of a family affair.

“Flag Day” marks the first directorial gig for Penn since his 2016 film “The Last Face.” He’s helmed several films in the past, but is probably best known for his acclaimed work in the 2007 film, “Into the Wild.” Of course, he’s also an Academy Award-winning actor with a ton of acting credits in great films under his belt. He was most recently seen in the Hulu series “The First.”

No release date has been set for “Flag Day,” however production began this week. This leads us to believe that a 2020 release is likely.
