Sony Announces 2020 Release Dates For What Appears To Be 'Venom 2' & Jared Leto's 'Morbius'

Okay, “Venom” fans, it sounds like we know exactly when Sony is planning on releasing the sequel, and it’s probably right when you thought they would.

Today, Sony announced (via The Wrap) two release dates for “untitled” Marvel films. And thanks to basic deduction and a smattering of movie release date knowledge, it’s fairly easy to figure out exactly what two films the studio has scheduled.

First, let’s take a look at the date of October 2, 2020. For that date, Sony announced that the “Untitled Sony/Marvel Sequel” will be released. So, taking a look at Sony’s recent Marvel films (not including the Marvel Studios-produced ‘Spider-Man’ films), the only logical film that is due for a sequel is “Venom.” And guess what? That film was released in October of this year. It appears that Sony isn’t ready to rock the boat and pick a new month for “Venom 2,” as the first film has been a massive success this year.

So, yes, it’s officially the “Untitled Sony/Marvel Sequel,” but don’t worry, it’s “Venom 2. The new release date also indicates that Sony is fast-tracking a sequel to capitalize on the success of the recent “Spider-Man” spin-off. For the film to hit that October 2020 release, filming would have to begin by next fall, at the latest, which means we should be hearing announcements fairly soon (San Diego Comic-Con 2019, perhaps?).

The other release date that was announced is for “Untitled Sony/Marvel” scheduled for July 10, 2020. Now, since sequel isn’t in the title, this is obviously a brand-new franchise. And considering the only other Marvel/Sony franchise that is prepping to begin filming soon enough to meet that release date is the upcoming “Morbius the Living Vampire,” starring Jared Leto and directed by Daniel Espinosa.

We’ve heard that ‘Morbius’ would be going into production in early 2019, and that would make sense that a July 10, 2020 release date would be in mind. However, it’s interesting to only give the two films three months breathing room. Granted, 2020 is looking to be fairly packed as it is with multiple comic book films from Warner Bros. and Marvel Studios already dated.

There you have it. We now have unofficially deduced these official release dates. “Venom 2” should be hitting theaters on October 2, 2020 and “Morbius the Living Vampire” will debut on July 10, 2020. Mark it in your calendars. Ask your job for the days off. Do what you feel is right.
