‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Adds Street-Level Villain Tombstone As ‘Spider-Verse’ Actor Marvin Jones III Joins Cast

After years of speculation about the arrival of live-action Tombstone, it’s been revealed that the Marvel Comics gangster is coming to “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” after playing a supporting role in the Oscar-winning animated film “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” and appearing in recent video games.

The casting/character update hails from Deadline, which revealed that actor Marvin Jones III (“Black Lightning”) has been tapped for the part of Alonzo Thompson Lincoln, who also goes by the underworld nickname of Tombstone. Funny enough, the actor voiced Tombstone previously in “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” making this a carryover casting from the animation side of things.

Basically, think of a villainous and mob-affiliated version of Luke Cage, quite the exciting prospect from director Destin Daniel Cretton, Sony Pictures, and Marvel. And could potentially hint toward that Emmy-winner Tramell Tillman‘s (“Severance”) mystery role possibly being a version of Robbie Robertson (just a fun theory for now), a mentor of sorts of Peter Parker from the Daily Bugle, who has a history with Lincoln as the two end up inmates together in the comics and was played by the late actor Bill Nunn in the Sam Raimi films (Lamorne Morris is said to be playing a variant of Robertson in the Multiverse series “Spider Noir“).

We had been hyped about the prospect of a street-level “Spider-Man” film (the Multiverse overuse is getting a tad exhausting) after Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige had called the web-head a “street-level hero,” and having a gangster character like Tombstone alongside Scorpion is potentially a sign that Peter Parker is going to be facing crooks, again, finally.

Then again, in the recent PlayStation exclusive game “Spider-Man 2,” there was a different take on the villain as he eventually goes straight and even helps to save people.

We’ll also see the cast of the latest Spidey installment, featuring Tom Holland, Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo, Sadie Sink, Michael Mando, and Liza Colon-Zayas. There is an expectation that Zendaya and Jacob Batalon will return, but the size of their roles hasn’t been determined, given how “No Way Home” ended.

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is currently in production with a release date set for July 31, 2026.
