‘Spider-Man’ Producers Tease New Tom Holland-Led Film, Live-Action Miles Morales & Spider-Woman Spinoff

While Disney owns Marvel and all of its characters, Sony still has the film rights to perhaps the biggest one of them all—Spider-Man. Though the two studios have combined forces on three ‘Spider-Man’ films recently, Sony has been milking the IP for all its worth, with various spinoffs, including “Venom,” “Morbius,” and “Kraven the Hunter.” And it would appear Sony isn’t stopping anytime soon with spinoffs.

Speaking to Variety, producers Amy Pascal and Avi Arad talked about the various “Spider-Man” projects coming in the future. And when Pascal was pressed for news about a potential live-action Miles Morales film or a spinoff focused on Spider-Woman, the producer gave the blanket statement that Sony is doing all of that and then some.

“You’ll see all of it,” Pascal said about potential live-action Miles Morales and Spider-Woman spinoffs. “It’s all happening.”

The Miles Morales news is interesting because, as of now, the character has only appeared in animation, in the ‘Spider-Verse’ films. As far as live-action, we’ve had one tease about Miles, which was in “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” where Donald Glover played a version of Miles’ uncle. But other than that, there haven’t been any definitive plans announced for a live-action version of Morales. And it’s unclear, based on Pascal’s very vague statement, whether a live-action Miles film would be in its own universe or connected to the MCU like the current ‘Spider-Man’ franchise.

As for a “Spider-Woman” film, Arad hinted that the project is in development and would be happening “sooner than you expect.”

“I cannot tell you yet, but it’s coming,” he said. Let’s not forget that’s the one actor/filmmaker Olivia Wilde is supposedly directing.

When asked about a fourth ‘Spider-Man’ film starring Tom Holland, there have only been reports of development moving forward on it, but nothing about specifics. The third film, ‘No Way Home,’ ended with a blank slate for the character, allowing him to exist in the MCU or to go off on his own adventures without the Avengers. There’s still no word on whether or not the fourth film will continue to exist in the MCU, but Pascal is willing to tease that it is indeed being worked on, though the WGA strike has put a pause on it.

“Are we going to make another movie? Of course, we are,” Pascal said. “We’re in the process, but the writer’s strike, nobody is working during the strike. We’re all being supporters, and whenever they get themselves together, we’ll get started.”

All of this news points to one conclusion—Sony isn’t slowing down on creating more ‘Spider-Man’-based projects. Whether it’s the various spinoff films, TV shows, or the main ‘Spider-Man’ franchise, the studio uses its Marvel license as much as possible.

“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” is set to arrive in theaters on June 2.
