It’s become a beloved annual tradition around these parts where we all gather ‘round and read through every bit of media that filmmaker Steven Soderbergh has consumed in a calendar year. Why do we do this? Well, not only is it interesting that Soderbergh decides to share his day-by-day breakdown of media consumption, but it also gives us a peek into the mind of one of the best filmmakers working today. With that out of the way, let’s talk some Soderbergh!

One of the most interesting parts of Steven Soderbergh’s SEEN, READ 2024 post on his website is taking a look at what films or TV shows he’s clearly obsessed with. And for 2024, the big one that stands out is his love of “Jaws.” Not only did he watch the film four times over the course of the year, but he read the source material novel, read a making-of book, and watched two docs about the film. That’s more “Jaws” than your average filmgoer, that’s for sure.
Another intriguing tidbit noticed in Soderbergh’s yearly list is his interest in “Star Wars” not only did he watch “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace” twice (two more times than what is recommended), but he ended his year with what looks like a full “Star Wars” binge, including the spinoff films. Obviously, this means Steven Soderbergh is studying because he’s working on a “Star Wars” project, right? Right? Ok yeah, he probably is just bored.
Perhaps the most shocking aspect of his 2024 list is the fact that he only went into production on one project in 2024, the upcoming film, “Black Bag.” Now, for most filmmakers, going into production is a huge moment, but this is something that Soderbergh typically does multiple times a year. But, for whatever reason, it appears his focus in 2024 was on “Black Bag.”
And lastly, we know it’s something that most people do, but we gotta say that Steven Soderbergh really loves true-crime as much as the rest of us. The man watched hours of true-crime in 2024. Oh yeah, and he watched the Olympics.
Again, if you want to read his whole list, it’s definitely worth a perusal here.
