Today is “Star Wars Day” and if you thought Disney/Lucasfilm would let the day come and go without some major news from a galaxy far, far away, then you’re insane. Well, even though we expected news about “Star Wars,” no one was probably expecting what Lucasfilm had up its sleeve.

According to the studio, a new “Star Wars” theatrical film is currently in development with Taika Waititi at the helm. Yes, the rumors were true. All of it. Well, okay, not all of it, but it’s a ‘Force Awakens’ reference that is too good to pass up. The film doesn’t have a title, synopsis, or anything hinting at what the story might be. But we do know that joining Waititi for the journey is writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns, who will co-write the film alongside the director. Wilson-Cairns is probably best known for her Oscar-nominated work on Sam Mendes’ “1917.”
So, we now know, for sure, one of the new “Star Wars” films that will arrive in theaters. And it’s coming from the man behind “What We Do in the Shadows,” “Hunt for the Wilderpeople,” and “Jojo Rabbit,” the latter of which earned him an Oscar trophy. Of course, this isn’t too shocking, as Waititi has been making sci-fi/fantasy films quite a bit recently. Recently, he released the mega-popular “Thor: Ragnarok” and is currently in development of the upcoming “Thor: Love & Thunder.”
In addition to his time at Marvel making blockbusters, Waititi recently directed an episode of the “Star Wars” live-action Disney+ series, “The Mandalorian.” So, his interest in the Lucasfilm franchise is well-documented.
The studio says that a release date is not confirmed, and it’s unlikely that this new “Star Wars” film will be ready in time for that 2022 release date that Lucasfilm has already staked for a new feature. Of course, with no other announcements about what that film might be, there’s also a chance that the 2022 release date might be pushed. However, clearly Waititi is going to be busy with ‘Thor’ business until 2022, when that film hits theaters. So, we’re still years away from the director’s “Star Wars” hitting the big screen.
