With the success of “Cobra Kai,” it’s clear there’s been a bit of a resurgence in interest with the ‘Karate Kid’ franchise. Well, Sony is ready to capitalize on that with a new entry in the film franchise, and the studio is ready to combine two of the biggest ‘Karate Kid’ stars to make it happen.
As seen in a new video, the next ‘Karate Kid’ movie is in the works. The video doesn’t really show much of anything, as it just reveals that Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan are returning to reprise their roles from earlier films. But it also serves as a way to announce the open casting call for a new young actor to take on the title role.
However, in a THR report, we do know a few more details about the film. The untitled ‘Karate Kid’ sequel will be directed by Jonathan Entwistle, the man behind series such as “I’m Not Okay with This” and “The End of the F***ing World.” The script is written by Rob Lieber. And the report claims the story will be set on the East Coast and will focus on a new teen from China who goes through their martial arts journey of self-discovery. Basically, the same story “The Karate Kid” has been telling over and over again since the ‘80s. But hey, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right?
In addition to the casting and plot details, we also know that Sony is being really aggressive with the release of the film, claiming a December 13, 2024 release date. Clearly, this is a project the studio wants to get going fast and get it in theaters as soon as possible.
All that’s left is to find the kid at the center of this ‘Karate’ story and to see if the general public’s fascination with this ‘80s franchise will continue into late-2024.
