‘The Wicker Man’: ‘Misfits’ Writer Howard Overman To Script A TV Remake Of The Horror Classic

When people mention “folk horror,” it doesn’t very long at all before the film “The Wicker Man” is brought up. Released nearly 50 years ago, the British horror film is not only a classic of the genre, but it really does stand as the poster child for folk horror. And now, it appears that the film is going to become a new TV series.

According to Deadline, The Imaginarium and Urban Myth Films are bringing “The Wicker Man” to TV screens in the future. The new series is expected to be written by Howard Overman, who is probably best known for his work on shows such as “Misfits,” “Merlin,” and the recent “War of the Worlds.”

“The Wicker Man” tells the story of a police officer who finds himself traveling to a remote island to investigate the disappearance of a young girl. While there, he’s horrified to find the population of the island worshipping Pagan gods and potentially doing much worse deeds. The original film was followed up by a remake in 2006, which stars Nicolas Cage. That remake is largely thought to be terrible, but it did gift the world with one of the best “so bad it’s hilarious” scenes to ever exist.

Not much else is known about the new show. Overman teased that the new show will be different than the original but “explore the same themes of sacrifice, superstition, and ritual that were at its core.”

Obviously, it’s too soon to know when “The Wicker Man” might arrive on TV screens. The studio is reportedly looking for a distribution partner now.
