Believe it or not, it’s been over 10 years since we’ve seen a feature film directed by Jane Campion. The Oscar-winning filmmaker, who also is one of the few women to be nominated for Best Director, has only directed episodes of the series “Top of the Lake” over the past decade, with her most recent film being the 2009 feature “Bright Star.” But now, she’s in the process of casting her upcoming return to feature films, “The Power of the Dog,” and she’s putting together one hell of a group of actors.
According to Deadline, actors Thomasin McKenzie, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Frances Conroy, Keith Carradine, Peter Carroll, and Adam Beach are the latest people to join the cast of Jane Campion’s upcoming film, “The Power of the Dog.” Those actors will star opposite previously-announced cast members including Benedict Cumberbatch, Jesse Plemons, and Kirsten Dunst.
“The Power of the Dog” tells the story of two brothers in 1920s Montana that run a ranch. Though the brothers are polar opposites, everything seems to be going okay until the younger brother (Plemons) marries a widow (Dunst), which sends the older brother (Cumberbatch) into a downward spiral that leads him to try his best to destroy the relationship and ruin the young widow.

The standout additions are McKenzie, who is probably best known for her most recent films “Leave No Trace” and “Jojo Rabbit,” and Smit-McPhee, who was seen in the sub-par superhero film “Dark Phoenix” and the hilarious “Dolemite is My Name.” But honestly, everyone that has been added to the cast are all quality actors.

No word on when we might see the film arrive. “The Power of the Dog” is set to be distributed by Netflix, so there’s still no word on whether the film will get a proper theatrical release or just sent directly to streaming. You have to assume that with Campion and the cast, the streaming service would want this film to get a bit of awards recognition with a nice theatrical run. But we shall have to wait and see.
