“Tyrant” is an upcoming thriller set in the cutthroat culinary world, and production has kicked off in Los Angeles with a batch of supporting cast members being assembled, with Charlize Theron (“Apex”), Julia Garner (“Weapons”), and Demi Moore (“The Substance”) already attached.
The casting announcement from Deadline sees Paapa Essiedu (“I May Destroy You,” “Harry Potter” series), on-the-rise Canadian actor Hudson Williams (“Heated Rivalry”), musician Omar Apollo (“Queer”), and Nara Smith taking roles.
Amazon MGM Studios, which recently released the successful sci-fi movie “Project Hail Mary” (has earned an impressive $613 million at the global box office) is behind “Tyrant” with David Weil (“Hunters,” “Citadel,” “Invasion”), both writing and directing the pic set in the high-stakes elite fine dining industry in New York City (despite the L.A. shoot) and feels like it could be the American version of “Boiling Point.”
The Picture Company‘s Alex Heineman and Andrew Rona are producers, along with Secret Menu‘s Theron, Beth Kono, and A.J. Dix. Also, Weil produces with Natalie Laine Williams, and executive producer Stan Wlodkowski is serving on “Tyrant” as well.
Sadly, we’re a tad in the dark concerning the film’s plot and character details, but we’re hopeful that information will come in the very near future with cameras rolling. Although it likely isn’t hard for us to imagine what a fine-dining thriller could look like, the tension in the kitchen and front-of-house is certainly ripe for dramatics and dark elements.
