Back in February, it was revealed that Emma Stone (“Poor Things”) and Chris Pine (“Hell or High Water”) were circling a new romantic comedy called “The Catch,” and now they’ve closed their deals to star with Universal Pictures setting the film’s release date for next spring. A prime spot on the studio’s 2027 slate for a project like this.
That update comes from Deadline, as the studio two-hander rom-com directed by Dave McCary has hit the first major hurdle, signing on talent and heading to theaters on May 21, 2027. Plot details are scarce for the moment; it has a spec script penned by Patrick Kang and Michael Levin with a recent draft from “Hacks” co-creator/co-showrunner Jen Statsky and Travis Helwig.
If you weren’t aware, McCary just happens to be the husband of Stone and previously helmed the Kyle Mooney comedy “Brigsby Bear.” This new film would mark his first feature effort since 2017, a nearly decade-long hiatus.
Other credits for McCary, a veteran “SNL” writer and director, include being a producer on films such as “A Real Pain,” “I Saw the TV Glow,” “Problemista,” and “When You Finish Saving the World.” Another comedy project McCary directed, in the past, was the viral internet sensation “Epic Rap Battles of History.”
Astute audiences will know that Stone is no stranger to the rom-com genre, with landmark movies like “La La Land” and “Crazy Stupid Love” under her belt. Pine isn’t completely new to the rom-com world either, with projects like “This Means War,” “Just My Luck,” “Blind Dating,” and having a key role in “The Princess Diaries” films.
We cannot wait to see how “The Catch” comes together and what that supporting cast will look like.
