'WandaVision': Teyonah Parris Says The Series Ending Is "Epic And Incredibly Sad"

Spoilers for the latest “WandaVision.”

Marvel‘s “WandaVision” may be inspired by American sitcoms like “The Dick Van Dyke Show” and most recently “Modern Family,” but underneath the shiny looks and the laugh tracks lies a darker story about grief and trauma. Now that the season is coming to an end, everything is coming to a head and Wanda’s dreamworld of Westview is collapsing, at least one actor in the show teases an “incredibly sad” ending.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Teyonah Parris described the season finale as “Epic and incredibly sad,” and it’s not hard to see why. When our own Rodrigo Perez first reviewed the show, he noted “what ‘WandaVision’ excels at—even if the moments are tremendously ephemeral—is grappling with trauma.” After the initial three episodes got us acquainted with the show’s take on sitcom tropes, the past couple of episodes have done a much better job of getting us inside Wanda’s head and how desperately she’s trying to hold on to the lie surrounding her — that she can have the perfect life she’s always dreamed of.

Couple that with Vision slowly realizing that his entire existence is a lie and he was brought back to life by Wanda, and you have one of the most emotional stories in the entire MCU. The last episode then pulls back the curtain and reveals who exactly has been pulling the strings all along. The introduction of Agatha Harkness also hints at the darkest chapter in Wanda’s history in the comics, which involves Marvel Comics’ version of the devil essentially stole the souls of Wanda’s twins while Agatha erased their existence from Wanda’s memory. If “WandaVision” goes for a Mephisto storyline, it would undoubtedly result in an “epic and incredibly sad” ending.

On the other hand, the way the last couple of episodes have sort of side-tracked Wanda in favor of Monica Rambeau and other side characters. It may feel like the show is becoming more of a prequel to “Captain Marvel 2” rather than Wanda’s story, which would undermine all the good the season has done so far. For the time being, let’s hope Teyonah Parris’s “incredibly sad” description is a compliment rather than a sign of disappointment.
