Yahya Abdul-Mateen II leads “Wonder Man,” the next major Marvel Studios series debuting on Disney+ this December. The actor, known for “Aquaman,” “Watchmen,” and “Candyman,” stars as Simon Williams, a Hollywood actor who unexpectedly gains superpowers and must navigate a double life as both a celebrity and a reluctant hero. The series also features Ben Kingsley, Demetrius Grosse, Ed Harris, and Arian Moayed, with episodes directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Tiffany Johnson, James Ponsoldt, and Stella Meghie.

Created by Cretton (one of the series’ executive producers) and Andrew Guest, “Wonder Man” arrives during a major transitional moment for Marvel. After years of overlapping film and TV projects that left audiences feeling overwhelmed, Kevin Feige has confirmed the studio will slow down its output. The new approach—fewer projects, more focus—is designed to restore the creative balance that defined the studio’s earlier success.
“I don’t like when things sit on shelves,” Feige said, referencing how the already completed “Wonder Man” sat unreleased for over a year. “It stinks.” He also admitted that the streaming boom pushed Marvel into overproduction: “For the first time ever, quantity trumped quality… Suddenly, there’s a mandate to make more. And we go, ‘Well, we do have more.’”
With high-budget disappointments like “The Eternals” and “The Marvels” and small-screen misfires such as “Echo” and “Secret Invasion,” the change feels overdue. Feige’s plan to reduce interconnected storytelling aims to give new series like “Wonder Man” space to stand on their own rather than feeling like mandatory homework for fans trying to keep up with the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Written by Andrew Guest and Destin Daniel Cretton, “Wonder Man” follows Simon Williams as he struggles to balance fame, ambition, and the moral weight of being a real-life superhero in the entertainment capital of the world. The series premieres on Disney+ in January, according to a new EW article. Watch the first teaser trailer below.
