The film world got collectively excited when it was announced last week that a sequel to “Zoolander” was officially in the works with Justin Theroux penning the script. Now, speaking with MTV, Ben Stiller has revealed a few more details regarding the sequel.
“We have a new story idea that we feel excited about and we’re going to try to go forward,” he said. “The beginning of the movie is … 10 years later, and Derek & Hansel are literally forgotten. Nobody even knows who they are, so they have to re-invent themselves.”
Stiller went on to say that he’s working with Theroux on putting together the script, and will utilize some of the best bits from previous scripts done by John Hamburg (“Along Came Polly,” “Meet The Fockers”) and Nicholas Stoller (“Yes Man,” “Get Him To The Greek”).
And with fans already clamoring for Will Ferrell to return as Mugatu, Stiller is definitely game, “If Will says yes, he definitely has to be a part of it.” So perhaps some kind of alliance of evil with the previously announced villain to be played by Jonah Hill? And while it’s not officially confirmed yet if Owen Wilson will reprise his role as the free-loving, brain-dead model Hansel, Stiller’s comments suggest you can’t make the sequel without him.
No word yet on when this might get in front of cameras but it certainly won’t be until after Stiller wraps work on “Help Me Spread Goodness,” which he will direct and begins shooting next month in Nigeria and the United States.
