It felt like a Hollywood miracle when it was announced. Living legend Daniel Day-Lewis would pull himself out of a self-imposed acting retirement for the family drama, “Anemone,” he co-wrote with his son, Ronan Day-Lewis, who will also take on directing duties. The film will be produced by Brad Pitt’s Plan B.
Focus Features (a division of Universal Pictures) announced this week that it will release “Anemone” on October 3 in limited release before expanding on October 10, placing it in a prime awards season spot.
Joining Day-Lewis among the cast are actors such as Sean Bean (“Snowpiercer,” “Game of Thrones”), Samuel Bottomley (“Somewhere Boy”), Safia Oakley-Green (“The Burning Girls,” “The Lazarus Project”), and Samantha Morton (“The Walking Dead,” “She Said”).
A brief logline courtesy of Focus Features:
The film explores the complex and profound ties that exist between brothers, fathers, and sons.
Of course, Day-Lewis shocked the industry after winning a Best Actor Oscar statue for his career-defining performance in Paul Thomas Anderson’s dressmaker romantic drama “Phantom Thread,” and decided to retire from acting. Not the worst time to bow out of the industry after winning three Academy Awards, as the other two were for the gritty oil tycoon pic “There Will Be Blood” and Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln” biopic. After being previously nominated for his other iconic roles in “Gangs of New York,” “In The Name of The Father,” and “My Left Foot.”
While we could easily assume “Anemone” will end up getting consideration from various awards ceremonies, it is questionable whether we should even be measuring up the film to other masterful work from Day-Lewis, as we’re getting the feature directorial debut of Ronan, and the pressure is already on to deliver something special from the father-son duo.
Other theatrical releases on deck for Focus include Wes Anderson’s “The Phoenician Scheme” on May 30 and Ethan Coen’s “Honey Don’t!” hitting theaters on August 22.
