Mia Hansen-Løve Working On Hostage Drama 'Maya' & Film Inspired By Her Relationship With Olivier Assayas

Filmmaker Mia Hansen-Løve seems to be in the midst of a particularly productive streak. Coming off “Eden” which delved into the French electronic music scene of the 1990s, she launched right into “Things To Come” starring Isabelle Huppert, about a woman dealing with a series of late life crises, which premiered earlier this year at the Berlin Film Festival, and will be released in the U.S. by Sundance Selects. And now she’s got two projects brewing, and true to form, they see the director moving in two different, but exciting directions.

First on her plate is “Maya,” which is gearing up to shoot next year, and will star Roman Kolinka (who worked with Hansen-Love on “Eden” and “Things To Come”) and tells the story about a French hostage, held in Syria, who works through his devastating experience by heading to India. And after that will be something hitting a little closer to home — a movie inspired Hansen-Love’s relationship with her husband, director Olivier Assayas. And as you might imagine, he’s been an important sounding board as she puts together her movies.

“From my first film, he was always the one I gave the script to and showed the first editing,” she told Screen Daily. “He reads the script in a very early stage, even before I give anything to any producer. He never shows up during shooting and I never show up during the shooting of his films. But then, when I edit, I could not show the film to anybody before I show it to him.”

She trusts Assayas will be able to be objective as that project develops, and it’ll be interesting to see what shape that project takes. Either way, with plenty on the table for Hansen-Love, it’s good to know there’s much to look forward to from the director.
