Sarah Pidgeon Joins Aaron Taylor-Johnson & Alicia Vikander In Netflix’s ‘Enigma Variations’

eter Hermann, Juliana Canfield, and Francesca Cavallin have also joined Oliver Hermanus’ adaptation of André Aciman’s novel.

Coming off her Emmy-nominated turn as Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy in FX’s “Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette,” Sarah Pidgeon has booked her next prestige limited series. According to Deadline, the rising actress has joined Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Alicia Vikander in Netflix’s “Enigma Variations.”

Peter Hermann (“Younger”), Juliana Canfield (“Succession”), and Italian actress Francesca Cavallin (“The Nest”) have also joined the ensemble. Details about the four new cast members’ roles are being kept under wraps.

Based on the 2017 novel by “Call Me By Your Name” author André Aciman, the “Enigma Variations” limited series follows Paul, played by Taylor-Johnson, across several decades of romantic and sexual longing. His relationships with both men and women stretch from an adolescent infatuation in Southern Italy to later encounters in New England and New York, with his desires remaining restless, elusive, and frequently divided.

Vikander’s casting was announced in June. She and Taylor-Johnson lead a project that initially had “The Bear” star Jeremy Allen White attached to play Paul before Taylor-Johnson took over the role when Netflix officially ordered the series earlier this year.

South African filmmaker Oliver Hermanus will direct and executive produce. Hermanus has already demonstrated a particular affinity for intimate, emotionally repressed material with “Living,” “Moffie,” and “The History Of Sound,” making Aciman’s decades-spanning study of desire an especially natural fit.

Amanda Kate Shuman, whose credits include “The Wheel Of Time,” serves as writer, showrunner, and executive producer. Aciman, Hermanus, Michael Ellenberg, Christina Malach, Lindsey Springer, and Monica Levinson also executive produce, with Media Res behind the adaptation.

Pidgeon’s “Enigma Variations” casting continues a rapid ascent following her work in “The Wilds,” “Tiny Beautiful Things,” and the Tony-winning Broadway production of “Stereophonic,” which earned her a Tony nomination. However, her breakout screen role arrived this year with Ryan Murphy’s “Love Story,” playing Bessette-Kennedy opposite Paul Anthony Kelly as John F. Kennedy Jr.

Production on “Enigma Variations” is underway in Italy. Netflix has not yet announced a premiere date, but presumably the film will arrive sometime in 2027.
