“The Deliverance”
It’s been a minute since we heard from filmmaker Lee Daniels (his last film, “The United States vs. Billie Holiday”), but he switches gears with “The Deliverance” and delves into the supernatural horror genre while still keeping with a black perspective. Starring his ‘Billie Holiday’ lead Andra Day,  the movie also stars Rob Morgan, Caleb McLaughlin, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Tasha Smith, Omar Epps, Mo’Nique, and Glenn Close, the film centers on a family living in an Indiana home who discover strange, demonic occurrences that convince them and the community that the house is a portal to hell.
Release Date: In select theaters on August 16 and streaming on August 30 Netflix.

“The Union”
A spy action comedy-thriller from up-and-coming U.K. writer Joe Barton (who wrote on a never-green-lit’Batman’ spin-off for Matt Reeves and wrote the spy series “Black Doves” for Keira Knightley), “The Union” has a simple premise of a construction worker who is roped into the espionage world by his former high school girlfriend. The unlikely pair is Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry, and the supporting cast includes Mike Colter, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Alice Lee, Jackie Earle Haley, and J. K. Simmons. Julian Farino, known for directing “Entourage,” is at the helm.
Release Date: August 16, 2024 on Netflix.

“Blink Twice
The directorial debut of actress Zoë Kravitz, which she co-wrote, “Blink Twice,” is a dark, twisty psychological thriller once named “Pussy Island.” The film seems to center on the idea of douchey rich tech bros, and warped billionaires like Jeffrey Espstein as the plot centers on a cocktail waitress (Naomi Ackie), who is invited to stay on a remote private island owned by the charming tech billionaire Slater King (Channing Tatum). Once there, a luxurious party seems to go wrong and awry, and the friend she traveled with (Alia Shawkat) goes missing. “Blink Twice” also features Christian Slater, Simon Rex, Adria Arjona, Kyle MacLachlan, Haley Joel Osment, and Geena Davis.

Release Date: August 23 via MGM.
