We’ve been eagerly anticipating “Reprise” and “Oslo August 31” director Joachim Trier‘s new film “Thelma,” but it seems festival programmers are less enthused, at least overseas. The film wasn’t at Cannes, doesn’t seem like its going to Venice, and will instead debut at the Norwegian International Film Festival in August, before crossing the pond to TIFF. Perhaps it’s too genre-y for prestigious fest types, but whatever the reason, it hasn’t lessened our excitement for the picture.
Starring Eili Harboe, Okay Kaya, Ellen Dorrit Petersen, Henrik Rafaelsen, Vanessa Borgli, Ingrid Giæver, Anders Mossling, Jonas Jörgensen, Steinar Klouman Hallert, Grethe Eltervåg, Marte Magnusdotter Solem, Oskar Pask, Ludvig Algeback, Vidar Fransson, and Ian Twedmark, the supernatural thriller follows a young woman who suddenly discovers she has terrifying, mysterious powers after she falls in love. Here’s the synopsis:
Scripted by Trier and his usual collaborator Eskil Vogt, Thelma catches up with the shy student, when she has just left her religious small town family to study at the university in Oslo. Shortly after semester start she experiences a violent, unexpected seizure at the library, and soon after, she finds herself intensely drawn towards Anja, a beautiful student who reciprocates her powerful attraction.
Thelma becomes increasingly overwhelmed by her intense feelings for Anja, which she doesn’t dare acknowledge, even to herself, while at the same time experiencing more extreme seizures. As it becomes clear that they are a symptom of inexplicable, often dangerous, supernatural abilities, Thelma is confronted with tragic secrets of her past, and the terrifying implications of her powers.
Seriously, count us in for this one, particularly after this great new trailer. The Orchard will release “Thelma” in the U.S., but no date has been set. [Montages]
