Got a Tip?

Guns, Drugs, & Cryptocurrency Dominate The Plot-Heavy ‘Superfly’ Trailer

The new trailer for “Superfly” might only be 2-and-a-half minutes but it feels a lot longer. That’s not because the content is terrible. As a matter of fact, it actually looks interesting. It’s just that every second of the trailer is filled with plot points and twists and turns that you might think you watched the whole film by the end of it.

“Superfly” is the remake of the 1972 Blaxploitation film of the same name. While much of the story has been changed, primarily to fit with the modern setting, the guts of the film are very much the same. Youngblood Priest is living his best life as the head of a gang that is riding high. That is until a new gang comes into town, with Mexican drug cartel connections, and threatens his whole enterprise. That’s when Priest decides to have one last score and retire.

From the footage in the trailer, the film looks like an amalgam of various genres. You have the “Scarface”-esque crime film. There’s a bit of action thrown in, courtesy of some brief martial arts. Then, you see the “Sicario”-style Mexican drug cartel storyline that leads into a “one-last-job” heist film. Like we said earlier, there’s a lot going on here.

“Superfly” is helmed by Director X, best known for his music video work including the recent “God’s Plan” by Drake. The film stars Trevor Jackson, Jason Mitchell, Michael K. Williams, and Lex Scott Davis.

“Superfly” is set to release nationwide on June 15.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Superfly – the film that helped define a genre in its characters, look, sound, and feel – is reimagined with Director X, director of legendary music videos (Drake, Rihanna), introducing it to a new generation. The screenplay is by Alex Tse.
