Check Out The Wes Anderson-y Video For The 'Cinephile' Card Game

Playlist is forever. Some people move on, but they’re never forgotten and past writers are often doing great things in the name of cinema, and we love to support that. So attention all film nerds, movie geeks, and cinephiles. Your new obsession here.

Playlist pal and former scribe, Cory Everett, presents Cinephile: A Card Game. The game consists of one deck, 100+ cards, and multiple ways to play. A movie geek himself, Cory wanted to make a game specifically with other cineastes in mind.

“A lot of movie board games and card games are aimed at a wide audience, so they try to satisfy people who know a lot about movies and also people who don’t know very much,” says Cory. “I wanted to make Cinephile specifically for film nerds.” Everything Cory has made has been done so with the audience in mind. Even as far as the Wes Anderson-y trailer.

There are two main ways to play the game. First, there is Six Degrees. In the same vein as six degrees of separation, you take two cards and in a precise amount of time, try to connect the actors with the least possible films mentioned. Say you choose Winona Ryder and Penelope Cruz. Your objective: write down/ talk out loud, films, actors, directors, etc. to connect the two (in six ways or less). The second game is focused on filmography. You and an opponent choose one card. Now, name more films from that actor than your opponent. Pretty simple, definitely fun.

Following the Kickstarter campaign for Cinephile, Cory wants to expand. “I’d love to dig even deeper into specific pockets of film history,” he said. Cory has plans to create Classic Hollywood and Horror themed packs of the game. If the entire staff of The Playlist got together, you’d find us spending hours at this game, though probably arguing a lot.

Whether your a just a freshman film student yearning to test your knowledge, or a seasoned critic on your bus ride to Sundance, we can’t see how any self-proclaimed cinephile would turn this down. For the future, we can’t wait to see where Cory’s game goes. And, hopefully, maybe some discounts for former coworkers? We’ll talk to him directly about that. As Cory said, “The possibilities are endless.”
