Can you believe we aren’t even two weeks into the new year and we’re already talking about the upcoming film festivals? Sundance is just around the corner, we have SXSW creeping up in a couple of months, and then sandwiched in between, there’s Berlin. And in terms of the latter, we now know the film that is going to open the prestigious event.
According to Deadline, the Berlin International Film Festival announced the festival will open with the world premiere of Rebecca Miller’s new film, “She Came to Me.” The film stars Peter Dinklage and Anne Hathaway and tells the story of a composer, Steven Lauddem (Dinklage), who is trying to create his comeback opera. However, while on his quest for inspiration, he finds much more than he anticipated.

“We are very pleased to open this festival edition with an irresistible comedy that builds upon the everyday conflicts of western society,” Berlinale directors Mariëtte Rissenbeek and Carlo Chatrian said. “The characters, conceived by Rebecca Miller and incarnated by fantastic actors choose to follow the inspiration of the moment instead of being led by societal dictates. Like a pre-code Hollywood film, ‘She Came to Me’ is a magical ode to the freedom of expression.”
“She Came to Me” is playing out of competition at the event. Joining Dinklage and Hathaway in the cast are Marisa Tomei, Joanna Kulig, and Brian d’Arcy James.
Miller’s new film isn’t the only major American release expected to play at this year’s Berlinale. The festival is also expected to host a screening of “The Fabelmans,” while also honoring Steven Spielberg. In addition, Kristen Stewart has already been named as the jury president for the event. So, it would appear there is quite a bit of American representation in Berlin for 2023.
The 2023 Berlin International Film Festival begins on February 16.
