Got a Tip?

‘Ghost’: Channing Tatum Is Thinking About Remaking The 1990 Romance

There are few movie moments that are as iconic as the pottery scene in the romance drama, “Ghost.” More than 30 years later, the scene showing Demi Moore’s hands being guided by the ghost of her dead lover while she makes pottery continues to be referenced and parodied in all sorts of ways. And apparently, we could be looking at a remake of the classic film in the future. But who would be daring enough to attempt to out-sexy 1990’s Patrick Swayze? Well, none other than Channing Tatum, that’s who.

In a recent profile on Vanity Fair, Channing Tatum teased the fact that his production company has purchased the rights to “Ghost,” and they’ve been figuring out what to do with the property. For those who haven’t seen the 1990 original, “Ghost” tells the story of a man who is killed and then haunts his former lover as an apparition. But he’s not there to scare her. Instead, he aims to save her from the same person who killed him. And along the way, there’s a psychic who gets involved, played by Whoopi Goldberg.

“Yeah, we have the rights to ‘Ghost,’” revealed Tatum. “But we’re going to do something different. I think it needs to change a little bit…”

It’s unclear what he thinks will need to change about the original film if it gets remade. Obviously, “Ghost” hasn’t aged perfectly, as it was made more than 30 years ago. However, there are still generations of people who look to that film as one of the pinnacles of romance dramas. The original film earned five Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. It would go on to win two trophies, for Best Supporting Actress (Goldberg) and Best Screenplay.

Of course, if there’s anyone who could attempt to fill the sexy shoes of Swayze, it would be Tatum. He seems like the perfect type of guy who could inhabit that role and not immediately get scoffed at by critics. That said, there’s nothing about “Ghost” that feels like it needs to be remade. Well, except for the fact that it was hugely popular and iconic, and studios love to remake things with established fanbases. So, if that’s the only reason, then sure.

It’s far too early to know if “Ghost” will actually get remade or when it might be released. But it could happen.
