Kathryn Bigelow‘s Next Film Will Be A Political Thriller About A Missile Attack On The U.S.

It’s a bit ridiculous to think about how it’s been nearly seven years since Kathryn Bigelow’s most recent film project, “Detroit.” Bigelow is too good of a filmmaker to take this long between projects. Well, it appears the filmmaker has a new project on deck, which will hopefully mark her return to filmmaking.

According to a report from Puck, Kathryn Bigelow is set to make a Netflix political thriller about the White House’s response to ballistic missiles being shot at the United States. Not much else is known about the film other than it being written by Noah Oppenheim, the writer of projects such as “The Maze Runner” and “Jackie.”

Bigelow is probably best known for films such as “The Hurt Locker” and “Zero Dark Thirty.” Previous to that, she also directed films such as “Point Break” and “Near Dark,” which are both criminally underrated thrillers.

For those keeping track of Bigelow’s career might be a little confused by this announcement. She was previously attached to another Netflix film, “Aurora,” just a couple of years ago. Apparently, the filmmaker has left that project (though the New York Times reported that Netflix canceled it a few weeks back). It was said to be written by David Koepp and tells the story of a worldwide power crisis.

The new, untitled film is reportedly going to be announced by Netflix very soon, so it would appear that the studio has confidence that this film will get made. There are quite a bit of behind-the-scenes changes over at Netflix, with Dan Lin taking over the studio after the sudden departure of Scott Stuber. Lin is expected to bring a lot of big changes to the studio as they attempt to figure out what its identity will look like moving forward. Previously, Netflix was seen as a studio that would perhaps overpay for projects. Now, we might see the studio become a bit more frugal.

Obviously, it’s too soon to know when we might see Bigelow’s next feature.
