Speaking at the Lumière Festival (via Deadline), Xavier Dolan talked about what’s next in his career. 2019 was the last time we got a new film from Dolan, the drama “Matthias & Maxime.” Since then, he did finish the 2022 series, “The Night Logan Woke Up.” But in terms of feature films, it’s been nearly six years. That might be changing fairly soon, as the filmmaker hopes to begin work on a new film next year. What might fans expect in the new project? Well, it appears Dolan is going to venture into the world of genre filmmaking.

“It’s going to be a genre film, that’s for sure,” said Dolan. “Is it going to be a horror movie? I might have spoken too soon. There’s a lot of comic elements in the writing. There will certainly be horror moments, but it’s rather an amalgam of lots of genres.”

He added, “It will be the second chapter, the second half of a career where I slowed down to the point of nearly stopping. I know I could never sustain the same rhythm that I had before. I was younger and I was different.”

Previously, the filmmaker talked about his next project and said that it was a genre film set in the 19th century France. He also described it as “the most personal story I could tell in my life right now.”

It’s especially good to hear Dolan talk about the future because he’s a filmmaker who has threatened early retirement on multiple occasions. So, it’s nice to know Dolan is eager to get working on his next film and begin his “second chapter.”

Dolan is probably best known for films such as “I Killed My Mother,” “Tom at the Farm,” and “Mommy.” He’s also worked on recent projects such as the aforementioned “Matthias & Maxime,” as well as “The Death and Life of John F. Donovan.”

If filming does begin on his next film in 2025, then it looks like we might get a new Dolan feature by 2026.
