Searchlight Pictures is behind a new take on the 1989 romantic comedy “War of The Roses” as the studio has released a first-look trailer for “The Roses,” starring the duo of Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”) and Benedict Cumberbatch (“Power of The Dog”).
Allison Janney, Ncuti Gatwa, Andy Samberg, Sunita Mani, and Kate McKinnon are among the supporting cast.
An official synopsis for “The Roses”:
Life seems easy for picture-perfect couple Ivy (Olivia Colman) and Theo (Benedict Cumberbatch): successful careers, a loving marriage, great kids. But beneath the façade of their supposed ideal life, a storm is brewing – as Theo’s career nosedives while Ivy’s own ambitions take off, a tinderbox of fierce competition and hidden resentment ignites. The Roses is a reimagining of the 1989 classic film “The War of the Roses,” based on the novel by Warren Adler.
“She has a little victory every day by putting wee in her husband’s tea. She pees in his tea every day…I love that you can see the journey of two people who adore each other and slowly, slowly, bit by bit start to try and tear each other apart,” Colman told Vanity Fair of her character’s dwindling marriage in a new profile for the upcoming comedy directed by Jay Roach (“Austin Powers,” “Meet The Parents”) from a script penned by Tony McNamara (“The Favourite”).
While Colman has spent most of her recent career pursuing award-caliber projects, she got her start in the world of British comedy in things like “Peep Show,” “That Mitchell & Webb Look,” Edgar Wright‘s “Hot Fuzz,” and brief appearance in the original version of “The Office,” showcasing her humorous chops. Making the beloved actress a great selection to take on a role previously inhabited by Kathleen Turner, who had a similar gravitas in the other incarnation, while having some excellent wit and comedic timing.
Disney and Searchlight will be releasing “The Roses” on August 29, and you can watch the new trailer below.
