Apple TV’s sci-fi lane has become one of the streamer’s defining strengths, and “Dark Matter” is returning to the fold this summer. The Blake Crouch-created series, based on his bestselling novel, returns for Season 2 on August 28, with a 10-episode run that will release weekly through October 30.
The series stars Joel Edgerton as Jason Dessen, a physicist, professor, and family man whose life was violently upended in Season 1 after he was abducted into an alternate version of his own reality. What began as a nightmare of parallel lives and impossible choices eventually became a race to return to the family he knew, with Daniela, played by Jennifer Connelly, caught in the emotional wreckage of Jason’s fractured existence.

Season 2 picks up with the Dessens attempting to settle into a quiet life in a world that finally seems safe. Naturally, safety does not last. Apple’s synopsis says the family is forced to run again as Jason’s obsession with the Box deepens and Daniela’s paranoia threatens their fragile stability. Elsewhere, Amanda and Ryan join forces in a desperate attempt to find their way home, while Blair tries to stop Leighton as he pursues his vision of a perfect world.
The returning ensemble includes Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Dayo Okeniyi, Oakes Fegley, and Amanda Brugel. Crouch serves as creator, executive producer, showrunner, and writer, with Matt Tolmach, Richard Lederer, and Jacquelyn Ben-Zekry also serving as executive producers. Ben-Zekry co-wrote every Season 2 episode with Crouch, while Edgerton and Connelly executive produce in addition to starring.
Produced for Apple TV by Sony Pictures Television, “Dark Matter” returns at a moment when the streamer continues to lean heavily into genre programming, with high-concept sci-fi and speculative drama remaining a core part of its original-series identity.
