Just days after Comic-Con with no mutant announcements, Marvel Studios is beginning to put together its new generation of mutants. Samara Weaving has landed the role of Emma Frost, aka the White Queen, in Marvel’s upcoming “X-Men” reboot, according to Deadline.
Marvel has not officially announced the casting, and the studio declined to comment to the outlet, but the trade reports that director Jake Schreier and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige settled on Weaving earlier this week after an extensive search for the role.

Apparently, it wasn’t a small field, either. Marvel and Schreier have spent the summer meeting with and auditioning actors for several members of the new X-Men lineup, and Deadline says the hunt for Emma Frost was particularly exhaustive. A final group of actors tested for the part shortly after July 4—though no names were revealed— with Weaving ultimately winning the role based on her audition.
The timing is interesting. Marvel made no “X-Men” announcements during its Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con last weekend, but that absence may be short-lived. The studio is expected to have mutant news at D23 next month, and Weaving’s casting suggests Marvel is getting the pieces into place ahead of a potentially much larger reveal.
Emma Frost first appeared in Marvel Comics in 1980 as a powerful telepath and member of the villainous Hellfire Club before eventually becoming one of the X-Men’s most prominent members, teachers, and leaders. Along with her telepathic abilities, Frost can transform her body into an organic diamond form. January Jones previously played the character in “X-Men: First Class.”
Casting Marvel’s new generation of mutants has quietly become one of the studio’s most closely watched projects. Disney acquired the “X-Men” film rights through its 2019 purchase of 21st Century Fox, but rather than immediately rebooting the team, Marvel has spent years gradually introducing mutants into the MCU while also revisiting the earlier Fox era.
The standalone reboot began moving forward in earnest last year when Schreier, coming off “Thunderbolts*” signed on to direct. Lee Sung Jin, creator of “Beef,” and Joanna Calo, co-showrunner of “The Bear,” are writing the screenplay. Schreier had already worked with Lee on both “Beef” and “Thunderbolts*.”
Weaving has had an especially busy 2026. She reprised Grace MacCaullay in “Ready Or Not 2: Here I Come” in March, followed that with IFC’s “Over Your Dead Body” opposite Jason Segel, and starred in the June romantic crime thriller “Carolina Caroline.” Her genre résumé also includes the original “Ready Or Not,” “Mayhem,” “The Babysitter,” and “Scream VI.”
Emma Frost may be the first major piece of the new team to become public, but probably not the last for long. With D23 coming next month and Marvel expected to start talking about “X-Men finally,” Weaving’s casting could be the first sign that the studio’s mutant reboot is about to come fully into view.
