The Weinstein Company has reportedly lost the rights to “Sin City 2,” the much delayed sequel to Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller’s 2006 film “Sin City.”
Update: The story here is complicated and we can’t get an official answer, but again, there’s a reason why there’s three films coming out by Rodriguez first that are not “Sin City 2.”
Though details surrounding the changing of hands for the rights are sketchy, word has it that the film will now be financed by a soon-to-be-announced private equity group with Universal as a potential distributor. Rodriguez’s Trouble Maker studios would evidently still produce.
It is not known what kind of effect this have on the film’s production but most people tend to think with the Weinstein’s out of the way the road will be easier, but then again almost every Rodriguez film thus far has been under their aegis.
The Weinstein Company have been much maligned of late for their handling of films – “Crossing Over,” a project starring Harrison Ford, Ray Liotta, Ashley Judd and Jim Sturgess, was recently dumped into theatres with no purpose while criticism was also rampant regarding the marketing of Kevin’s Smith “Zack And Miri Make A Porno.”
Rodriguez recently admitted that “Sin City 2” wasn’t on his short term agenda; “I always say [the film’s] right around the corner, because that’s what everybody wants to hear and I like pleasing the audience. It might be a long corner.” He also has projects such as “Nerverackers” and “The Jetsons” on his radar but will this backroom drama change his mind?
Actress Jamie King, who plays twins Goldie and Wendy in the original film, previously revealed a clash between the Weinstein’s and Rodriguez: “[The Weinsteins] want to do weird things with the second one. Robert [Rodriguez] didn’t want to go down that route, so we’ve just been waiting ’till somebody knocked some sense into them, where we can do it the way we want to do it.” If Rodriguez was to have a change of heart, the film would hypothetically be able move into development rapidly as Rodriguez previously stated at Comic Con 2008 that scripting for ‘Sin City 2’ and for a potential third film was complete. Rodriguez’s co-director Miller has consistently talked up the sequel, although after “The Spirit,” would studios have any confidence in him?
Rodriguez’s directorial prowess will next be seen in “Shorts,” a kids film starring Jon Cryer, Leslie Mann and William H. Macy.
