Antonio Banderas To Play Surrealist Quack, Salvador Dali

Everyone wants to play Salvador Dali all of a sudden, the famous wacky Spanish surrealist painter that appealed to teenagers who first discovered pot and art in high school at the same time.

Robert Pattinson will threaten his pin-up hunk “Twilight” status by playing the young, pre-moustachioed artiste in “Little Ashes” and now Spaniard Antonio Banderas is in final negotiations to play the painter in a Simon West-directed indie biopic simply titled, “Dali,” according to Variety.

“Indie-biopic,” huh? West directed “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” and “Con Air” (and then did a lot of TV). This should be interesting. There is also a third, Dali biopc in the works starring Al Pacino called, “Dali & I: The Surreal Story.”

Dali also collaborated in the film world, working with Alfred Hitchcock on the dream sequence from 1945’s “Spellbound,” and perhaps more famously with Luis Buñuel on the experimental works, “Un Chien Andalou” and “L’Âge d’Or.” Shooting on the Banderas project is supposed to start early 2009 in Spain.

The infamous eye-ball slicing scene from “Un Chien Andalou” which the Pixies famously sang about in the song, “Debaser” (“I am Un CHIEN adalousia!”)
