'Chief Of War': Jason Momoa To Star/Write Hawaiian Historical Series

Jason Momoa is one of the more in-demand actors in Hollywood that have been able to juggle television series and film. With his Apple TV+ show “See,” appearing in multiple Netflix films like the upcoming fantasy film “Slumberland” from director Francis Lawrence, the supporting role in Denis Villeneuve‘s Oscar-winning epic “Dune,” and finishing up James Wan‘s “Aquaman” sequel in the United Kingdom, Momoa has been working non-stop for the last two years. And now, he’s looking to continue that established relationship with Apple and is taking a rather large creative role in a new project.

Variety has revealed that Momoa is reuniting with Apple for “Chief of War,” an 8-episode historical drama series focused on the unification and colonization of Hawaii from the perspective of the Indigenous population.

Momoa, who is of Hawaiian descent, will be both starring and co-writing alongside Thomas Pa’a Sibbett (“The Last Manhunt”) with Doug Jung (“Mindhunter“) attached as showrunner and “Blue Bayou” director Justin Chon in talks to helm the first two episodes. While this is the actor’s first time writing for television, he previously co-wrote the film “Road To Paloma,” which he also starred in and directed.

Chernin Entertainment will produce after having recently worked with Momoa on “Slumberland.”

Momoa’s other Apple series, “See,” now in its third season, focuses on a post-apocalyptic future where nearly all remaining humans have lost their sense of sight.

The actor won’t be slowing down his work on studio blockbusters anytime soon as he’ll play the villain in “Fast 10” alongside Vin Diesel and “The Suicide Squad” breakout actress Daniela Melchior in the near future. “Aquaman & The Lost Kingdom” was recently pushed back by Warners for a release on March 17, 2023, to avoid going head-to-head with “Avatar 2.”
