Benioff & Weiss Talk About Transition From 'Game Of Thrones' To Their 'Star Wars' Films: "We're Not Quite Hated Enough Already"

In just about a month-and-a-half, fans of “Game of Thrones” will find out who sits on the Iron Throne at the end, and thus, how good of a job series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss did in ending the popular HBO show. As if that wasn’t enough pressure, right after the duo finishes up their ‘Thrones’ duty, they will be shipped off to a galaxy far, far away to begin work on a highly-anticipated new series of “Star Wars” films for Lucasfilm. And don’t worry, they’re fully aware of the mess they’re about to walk in on, particularly with the very devoted fans.

Speaking to EW, Weiss and Benioff discussed their mysterious new films, and had a bit of fun with the idea of the expectations fans have on the pair to create the next big thing in the “Star Wars” universe.

“We feel we’re not quite hated enough already by people we don’t know,” Weiss joked. The two filmmakers have the unique privilege to move from one, long-running fan-favorite franchise to another long-running, fan-favorite franchise. And with that, the Death Star-sized expectations.

Benioff said, “Our Captain Phasma origin story is going to blow people away.”

“It’s going to be Gwen’s monologue in the suit…” Weiss added. “The slowest [camera] push-in in movie history into her mask…”

They are, of course, joking about Gwendoline Christie’s character from the previous two entries in what Lucasfilm calls the Skywalker Saga. Interestingly enough, Christie is also featured prominently in the duo’s “Game of Thrones.” So, even though they are clearly poking fun at the idea of a Captain Phasma origin story, it would be fitting if it were true.

It’s widely expected that we won’t learn much about the future of the “Star Wars” universe until after ‘Episode IX’ hits theaters in December. Until then, fans will likely continue to hypothesize about what Benioff and Weiss are working on, and how they feel it will likely be terrible.
