The oft-repeated phrase: DC Studios, Warner Bros, and the DC brand have taken a beating within the last 12 months and arguably longer. The company hasn’t had a real hit since “Aquaman” (2018) and basically faced seven bombs or underwhelming showings in a row outside of “Joker” (2019) and “The Batman” (2022), which are arguably Elseworlds pictures outside the scope of the main DCEU. Since October of 2022, “Black Adam” underperformed, 2023’s March release “Shazam! Fury Of the Gods” flopped, and so did “The Flash,” which was supposed to be their big hit. And then there’s “Blue Beetle,” which is 2023’s second-last hope of 2023 (or last if “Aquaman: The Lost Kingdom” gets pushed to 2024, currently a possibility given all the rumors of numerous reshoots to fix the ailing movie).
Starring Xolo Maridueña (“Cobra Kai”) and directed by “Charm City Kings” director Angel Manuel Soto, “Blue Beetle” comes out August 18 and comes from a screenplay by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer and the first reactions are in. The verdict is: it’s good, funny, and emotional, but will that save the movie at the box office? After all, we were repeatedly told by Warner Bros. David Zazlav and DC Studios co-chief, and Tom Cruise that “The Flash” was one of the best films of the year and, in the case of the former two, one of the best superhero films ever made. None of those things turned out to be true in the estimation of both critics and audiences.
What is “Blue Beetle” about? It’s essentially a coming-of-age superhero film (not unlike “Spider-Man”) where an alien relic chooses Jaime Reyes (Maridueña) to be its symbiotic host, bestowing the teenager with a suit of armor that’s capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny. Here are some critical reactions, including from some Playlist writers and contributors like Carlos Aguilar and Griffin Schiller, among many others.
Impressed by the pop culture details & historical references in BLUE BEETLE. From MACARIO, to CRONOS, and El CHAPULÍN COLORADO. But even more so that the infamous School of the Americas is integral to the story. This is the work of filmmakers who know & care about Latin America. pic.twitter.com/Li7ZTK629m

#BlueBeetle is a MASSIVE win for DC & an electric introduction to the first hero of the DCU. Xolo Maridueña's charismatic star making performance confidently anchors this intimate synthwave journey of family, heritage, & purpose. A fresh and endearing spin on the origin story! pic.twitter.com/BlpXS2iKFl

#BlueBeetle is here & Latinos FINALLY have a superhero of their own reflected on the big screen. The film is so incredibly good, so unique & delivers on all fronts giving the superhero genre much needed sazón! The film 's Tangerine Dream inspired synthwave score also rocks! pic.twitter.com/C6QgvexlTx

DC should’ve marketed #BlueBeetle more. It's a fun, self-contained, emotional story about family. Xolo Maridueña is perfectly cast and SHINES as Jamie Reyes. George Lopez and Bruna Marquezine are also standouts. I'm so happy #BlueBeetle is the first DCU character. pic.twitter.com/ANyyx2gPXv

Happy to report that @angelmanuelsoto’s #BlueBeetle is definitely a great time at the movies! Not only is it a fantastic introduction to Jaime Reyes as a character/hero, but also a love letter to the Latino culture, that focuses on family as its foundation. @bluebeetle 1/3 pic.twitter.com/ieVw0DSR2Z

#BlueBeetle echoes elements of super hero films like Iron Man, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Shazam!.

Angel Manuel Soto is so authentic in his directing, being what makes the film unique. It's a fun, contained story and the family drives it. I enjoyed the movie. pic.twitter.com/Nqk4iyYnME
Happy to report @angelmanuelsoto's #BlueBeetle was so much better than I expected. He's added his own flavor to the superhero genre by having the film focus on a tight-knit family and Latino culture. It’s fun, extremely funny, and he got away with a few jokes that floored me. pic.twitter.com/TA6I5a9sGl

Some is too silly or childish for me, a lot had me laughing loud (George Lopez!). Practical suit rocks. The Latino representation is awesome.
Enjoyed the family-centric stakes, solid action beats. Overall, it’s fun. pic.twitter.com/5qzWIkmDyE
#BlueBeetle is my favorite post-Nolan DC film.

It’s an action packed, highly entertaining superhero story about family…& there’s nothing more important than family.
The film is unique in that it lovingly & unabashedly shares the Reyes family’s Mexican culture. @bluebeetle 🧵 pic.twitter.com/o6Q9kUrbeC
#BlueBeetle was a huge surprise. After a shaky start, the #superhero movie is full of laughter, action & lots of heart. Xolo Maridueña kills it, So does Bruna Marquezine, George Lopez is hilarious & Adriana Barraza is a hoot as “Nana”. Take the whole familia & bring tissues. pic.twitter.com/EYlFQrnSJB

#BlueBeetle is a heartfelt and enjoyable addition to the DC universe. A phenomenal cast with charismatic characters and an intriguing plot. The representativity means a lot and it’s great to see. Xolo as the lead is simply amazing and can’t wait for more of him.

Some of my favourite moments in #BlueBeetle were all the video game references. @angelmanuelsoto packed so many cool Easter Eggs into the film. I can’t wait to catch more of them the second time around! pic.twitter.com/An2Jr49sfJ

“Blue Beetle” was initially tracking to a meager figure (less than $15 million opening domestically), but now seems to have popped up a little bit higher ($30 million, which is better, but not great for a superhero movie).
Pitched somewhere between “Spider-Man,” “Ant-Man” and “Iron Man,” “Blue Beetle” also stars Bruna Marquezine, George Lopez, Raoul Trujillo, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar, and Belissa Escobedo, along with Susan Sarandon.
Can “Blue Beetle” salvage DC’s year? Again, it seems doubtful. “The Flash” was touted as DC’s big tentpole that was supposed to salvage the summer and the overall cinematic box office. Instead, the expensive film flopped and couldn’t even gross $270 million worldwide.” Shazam! Fury Of The Gods” didn’t cost as much, but it also took it in the teeth, only grossing $133.8 million worldwide. “Blue Beetle” is DC’s third movie of 2023, and the final film of the year should be “Aquaman: The Lost Kingdom,” which is scheduled for December 2023.
That film has been riddled with reports of multiple rounds of reshoots to fix the movie (aka, it’s not great and needs work). At one point, ‘Lost Kingdom’ had Michael Keaton’s Batman in a cameo, then Ben Affleck’s Batman in lieu, but now it seems most of the surprise appearances have been nixed as the DC Universe keeps shifting.
DC Studios’ James Gunn has already suggested that he’s wiping most of the current DC Universe slate clean in favor of his own plans. However, he also indicated that “Blue Beetle” could stick around for his new iteration. But that may depend on how audiences receive the film and how it does at the box office. A $30 million opening would be on par with the “Shazam!” sequel and wouldn’t necessarily be something to write home about.
