Already a two-time Emmy-winning actress, Catherine O’Hara is also now a double Emmy nominee in the same category. The Canadian comedienne earned an Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series nomination for portraying Gail in HBO’s “The Last of Us.” She also earned an Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series for portraying the ex-studio Patty Leigh chief in Apple TV’s “The Studio.”
O’Hara was previously recognized in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series category for her role in “Schitt’s Creek” and writing on the heralded comedy series, “SCTV” in the 1980s, and she has ten Emmy nominations to her name so far. She is also a Golden Globe Award winner for “Schitt’s Creek” and a two-time Screen Actors Guild Award winner, also for the same beloved CBC Canadian sitcom.
Initially known for her comedy roles on the aforementioned legendary Canadian sketch comedy series, “SCTV,” she gained acclaim acting in comedies like “Beetlejuice” (1988), “Home Alone” (1990) and “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York” (1992). But the actress earned a huge award-winning career resurgence for her role as Moira Rose on “Schitt’s Creek” (2015–2020).
Actors earning multiple nominations in the same year is more common than you think. Recently, it’s happened to Jon Hamm five times (2009, 2010, 2012, 2015, 2024), Tina Fey four straight years (2008-2011, Sterling K. Brown three times (2018, 2020, 2021), and Bill Hader twice (2018, 2022). Emmy legend Maya Rudolph three times (2020, 2021, 2024), Allison Janney three times (2014-2016), Alex Borstein also three times (2018, 2019, 2023), and Pedro Pascal was nominated three times in one year, including in the Narrator category, just two years ago. Last year was massive with Rudolph, Hamm, Paul Rudd, Kristen Wiig, and Jonathan Pryce all earning multiple acting nominations.
O’Hara will return as Patty Leigh for the second “The Studio” season and will very likely reprise her role as Gail in “The Last of Us” season three; although when the hit HBO series resumes production remains to be seen. Her recent film work includes “Agylle,” “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” and “The Wild Robot.”
The 77th Primetime Emmy Awards will be broadcast live on CBS and streamed on Paramount+ on September 14 at 5 PM PT, 8 PM ET.
