New Showrunner Says 'Daredevil' Season 3 Will Be "Standalone" & Won't Crossover With The Other Shows

The Netflix/Marvel TV universe has gotten a bit…crowded, as of late. With two seasons of “Daredevil,” “Jessica Jones,” “Luke Cage,” and “Iron Fist,” along with single seasons of “The Punisher” (spinning off of “Daredevil) and “The Defenders” (combining all the shows, minus ‘Punisher), there’s a lot of content for fans to keep up with. And if you’re like many viewers, you might have given up post-‘Defenders.’ Well, good news for those lapsed fans, the upcoming “Daredevil” season 3 doesn’t require you to bust out your Netflix/Marvel encyclopedia to enjoy!

According to an interview with CBR, new “Daredevil” showrunner Erik Olsen explains why he ultimately chose to get rid of all that crossover business for the latest iteration of the flagship character, saying he wanted season 3 to be “standalone.”

“I wanted to really get back to these core characters and use the real estate to focus on who they are and really flesh them out before I introduced external elements of the MCU,” said Olsen.

So, what does that mean, exactly? Well, that’s still unknown. However, it would stand to reason that if you’ve watched the first two seasons of “Daredevil” (and in the scheme of things, they’re probably some of the better Netflix/Marvel offerings) and at least know what happened in ‘Defenders,’ then you’ll probably be just fine picking up “Daredevil” season 3.

That being said, if you’re a diehard Marvel Comics fan and want your MCU Easter Eggs, then it sounds like they’ll be there. It’s just they’re not going to be vital to understanding the plot. Olsen says that Marvel would come up to him and suggest things, saying, “‘This character you invented for this scene could be this other character from the MCU. Have you considered that?’”

All things considered, it looks like Marvel TV and Netflix are trying to create a new jumping on point for lapsed fans of the ‘Defenders’ characters. So, we’ll have to see how successful the streaming service and studio were when “Daredevil” hits Netflix on October 19.
