David Lynch Releasing Long-Delayed Album From 'Fire Walk With Me' Session Band, Fox Bat Strategy

Seems as though David Lynch has been devoting a lot of his creative energies to musical projects rather than film recently, what with his collaboration with Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse on Dark Night of the Soul, to which he contributed autotuned vocals and photographs.

Now we hear (via Pitchfork) that his new endeavor will be an actual rock album, titled Fox Bat Strategy: A Tribute to Dave Jaurequi, with lyrics written by Lynch. The Dave Jaurequi in question happens to be the guitarist/vocalist from the session band featured in Lynch’s “Fire Walk With Me,” the 1992 “Twin Peaks” movie based on the director’s early-nineties cult series that is kind of godawful and yet still ambitious (‘FWWM’ not the series), and the seven-track LP was recorded with the Fox Bat Strategy Band from the film in 1994. The Fox Bat Strategy appears in the “pink room and ‘blue Frank’ scenes” according to Lynch over on EW.com. Jaurequi died in 2006 at the age of 50.

Lynch calls the sound, “‘modern ’50s’ music,” and in speaking of Jaurequi’s vocal quality (he was not a singer but contributed vocals at the behest of Lynch), “I love that ’50s feel of innocence and pain mingling.” EW.com is streaming the track “Shoot the Works” for your listening pleasure.

Even though we haven’t seen a film from Lynch since 2006’s “Inland Empire,” us “Twin Peaks” die-hards are pretty excited about the release of this gem. Now, if only we could get a bonus track of James, Donna and Maddie’s rockabilly ballad from the series (sorry, nerd alert). The album is due out June 30 via Rykodisc and David Lynch Music Company.
