‘Django/Zorro’: Antonio Banderas Says Quentin Tarantino Approached Him About Starring In The Crossover Film

Several years ago, it was announced that Quentin Tarantino was going to team up with writer-comedian Jerrod Carmichael for a potential “Django/Zorro” crossover film. Not much else was known at the time, but it was assumed that the film would include Jamie Foxx reprising his role as Django. The actor under Zorro’s mask was unknown. Well, apparently Tarantino already had someone in mind.

Speaking to USA Today, Antonio Banderas talked about possibly returning to the role of Zorro after his starring role in 1998’s “The Mask of Zorro.” And in that discussion, he mentioned that Quentin Tarantino approached him about joining the aforementioned “Django/Zorro” team-up film.

“He talked to me, I think on the Oscar night [in 2020] when I was nominated for ‘Pain and Glory.’ We saw each other at one of those parties,” the actor revealed. “He just came up to me and I was like, ‘In your hands? Yeah, man!’ Because Quentin just has that nature to do those type of movies and give them quality. Even if they are based on those types of B-movies of the ’60s and ’70s, he can take that material and do something really interesting. We’ve never worked together, but it would be great because of him, because of Jamie Foxx and because of [playing] Zorro again when he’s a little bit older. It would be fantastic and funny and crazy.”

As was recently discussed by Carmichael, the “Django/Zorro” project eventually died, though he says the script is “incredible.” So, it’s highly likely we won’t get to see Banderas and Foxx team up in the action film from Tarantino. But what about future Zorro appearances outside of that feature?

“I don’t know. If I do Zorro again, I would actually be the character played by Anthony Hopkins in the first one. [Laughs],” said Banderas. “I’m gonna turn 62 this summer, so I don’t know if I can play that character in the same way I used to.”

While “Zorro” doesn’t seem to be in the cards, you can hear Banderas’ voice return for the lead role in “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” this December, which might be the final time you can see the actor play a swashbuckler. Even if it is just as a cat.
