Ethan Coen Sets Untitled Solo Film Project At Focus & Working Title

Last we heard, directing siblings Ethan Coen and Joel Coen, collectively known as The Coen Brothers, were going their separate ways. However, at the time, while Joel Coen was putting the finishing touches on “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” starring Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand, it appeared that Ethan Coen was done with movies altogether. According to longtime composer Carter Burwell, Ethan, didn’t “want to make movies anymore” and was shifting to the theater. Well, it appears, even a close collaborator like Burwell was wrong, as Ethan Coen’s next film has been announced.

Deadline reports that Coen is currently developing an untitled new film he’ll direct and has co-written with his wife, Tricia Cooke. However, there aren’t any concrete details about the project, and we’ll have to wait until those are revealed. Focus Features and Working Title are the ones that have secured the movie.

Again, there had been talk from composer Carter Burwell that Ethan would focus mainly on plays and distance himself from feature films, but that doesn’t seem to be the case with this news.

Ethan Coen’s most recent directing effort was the Netflix western anthology “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” with his brother before the two decided on doing their own things apart from each other. The filmmaking duo has been behind some of the most rewatchable films with “The Big Lebowski,” “Fargo,” “Miller’s Crossing,” “No Country For Old Men,” “Raising Arizona,” “O, Brother Where Art Thou?,” “True Grit,” and many more.

It remains to be seen if we’ll ever see the Coen Brothers reunite for the same project, as Joel Coen has suggested in recent months that their interests have simply just veered off in different directions. But we should always keep the perennial Hollywood adage in mind: never say never.
