The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the 91 songs that qualified for the 2017 Best Original Oscar today and there must be a sigh of relief from some songwriters and studios.
Intriguingly, “La La Land” submitted three tracks including “Audition (The Fools Who Dream),” “City Of Stars” and “Start A Fire.” That’s long been the plan but you have to wonder if they made a mistake not substituting the more popular “Another Day of Sun” or “Someone in the Crowd” instead of “Start a Fire.” Most strategists for popular films actually suggest only submitting two compositions because if all three get nominated it can ruin your chances for an overall win (see “Enchanted” and “Dreamgirls”).
EGOT hopeful Lin-Manuel Miranda has a shot at Oscar glory as two songs from “Moana,” “How Far I’ll Go” and “We Know The Way,” both qualified. “Drive It Like You Stole It” and “Go Now” both made the cut from “Sing Street” (there was some concern over the former) and “Set It All Free” and “Faith” (written by Stevie Wonder) from “Sing” also are in consideration.

It’s worth nothing singer/songwriter Sia has four potential nominated songs including “Try Everything” from “Zootopia,” “Never Give Up” from “Lion,” “Angel in the Wings” from “The Eagle Huntress” and the utterly underrated “Waving Goodbye” from “The Neon Demon.”
And of course, the best-selling single of the year, Justin Timberlake‘s “Can’t Stop The Feeling” from “Trolls,” is in contention.
The Best Original Song nominees will be reveled with the rest of the 89th Academy Award nominations on Jan. 24.
