Fox Orders Marvel Pilot That Sounds Like The Plot Of 'Midnight Special'

Good news! In case the Marvel shows on ABC, Netflix, and, starting next month, on FX (with “Legion“) weren’t enough, another network is gearing up to bring superpowers to the small screen, so a single day can’t pass without some kind of comic-book story unfolding.

Fox has gone ahead and ordered up a pilot for their untitled mutant show from Matt Nix (“Burn Notice“). But as we noted last summer, the new show has a premise that bears an uncanny resemblance to Jeff Nichols‘ sorely underseen and underappreciated “Midnight Special.” The story will follow two parents who discover their children are mutants. In order to escape the government and survive, the family joins an underground network of mutant fugitives.

Okay, so it’s not exactly like “Midnight Special” (there was no underground network for the kid in that movie), but still, the broad strokes are there. All that said, the series format obviously gives the creators a lot of room to take the narrative in intriguing directions.

Heavyweights Bryan Singer, Simon Kinberg, and Lauren Shuler Donner are among the producers, and I would assume that, like “Legion,” this show isn’t going to connect to the crazy X-Men movie universe that has folded over on itself. Moreover, we’ll see if this gets to a series order stage, though I would imagine Fox will roll the dice on anything Marvel-related given how huge the brand has become. [EW]
