‘I Came By’ Trailer: Babak Anvari’s New Thriller Stars George MacKay, Hugh Bonneville & Kelly Macdonald

Though the cultural zeitgeist is a few years removed from Banksy mania, street art remains a potent weapon for political and social criticism. The relationship between graffiti and vandalism is still hotly contested, but what might happen if an ambitious street artist took his designs even further… like, for instance, into someone’s living room? That’s the premise of “I Came By,” an upcoming Netflix thriller from British Iranian writer-director Babak Anvari

Here’s the film’s official synopsis:

A pair of rebellious, young graffiti writers, Toby and Jay, regularly target the homes of the U.K.’s wealthy elite and ruling class. When Toby breaks into the home of renowned former High Court Judge Sir Hector Blake, he discovers a shocking secret that leads him on a journey endangering himself and those closest to him.

The London-set film features an impressive array of U.K. talent, including “1917” star George MacKay, “Downton Abbey” veteran Hugh Bonneville, and BBC Two regular Kelly Macdonald. The prestigious resumes of the cast bode well for the intelligence of the material, which comes from Anvari and co-screenwriter Namsi Khan (“Black Mirror,” “Humans”). Supporting players include Varada Sethu, Gabriel Bisset-Smith, and Antonio Aakeel (“Slow Horses”).

Under the Shadow,” Anvari’s 2016 Persian-language debut, blended socio-political anxieties with supernatural horror and was selected as the British entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars (though it ultimately wasn’t nominated). His 2019 English-language follow-up “Wounds” focused more on the horror part of that equation. “I Came By” aspires to a crowd-pleasing balance of class commentary and good old-fashioned Hitchcockian suspense.

“I Came By” is scheduled for worldwide release on Netflix beginning August 31. Catch a glimpse of the trailer below.
