Javier Bardem Will Be Universal's 'Frankenstein'

Now that cinematic universe’s are par for the course in Hollywood, if you’re an A-list actor these days, you can’t really snub your nose at that kind of blockbuster fare. It’s pretty much the only thing studios are willing to spend lots of money on, and if you want to keep your bread buttered, and pay the bills for your fancy house, you have to read those scripts. It’s why people like Will Smith are taking roles in “Suicide Squad” or why Ben Affleck is in “Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice” or any number of big names are signing up for Marvel movies. And it’s also why Universal has already managed to attract the likes of Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp, and Russell Crowe to their brewing monster movie universe. And now they’re adding another acclaimed thespian to their ranks.

Variety reports that Javier Bardem is in talks to topline “Frankenstein.” While there’s no director for the picture just yet, presumably he’s been cast to make a cameo first — maybe in “The Mummy” as filming is headed toward the finish? — but clearly Universal is figuring out the starpower first, and filling in the rest later. Bardem is no stranger to blockbusters (he played the baddie in “Skyfall” and has “Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” coming up), and certainly there’s room for a good Frankenstein movie (20th Century Fox‘s “Victor Frankenstein” is probably best forgotten).

We know Bardem can play creepy and monstrous (see: “No Country For Old Men“), so he’s an intriguing choice here. Thoughts? Weigh in below.
