Got a Tip?

Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye Could Appear In ‘Captain America 3’; A New Rumored Name Surfaces For ‘Dr. Strange’

Jeremy Renner, HawkeyeJeremy Renner is going to be very busy for the next year. The actor has started shooting “Mission: Impossible 5” with Tom Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie (he’s still part of the team even though it wasn’t properly announced) and next summer he’ll be shooting the fifth, as-yet-untitled ‘Bourne’ movie for a summer 2016 release.

There’s also one more project for potentially coming down the pike for Renner in 2015. “There are rumblings of [a Hawkeye appearance in] ‘Captain America 3,’ ” he told Collider this week, “I don’t know what’s going to happen there. I’ve got to find the time, man. I’m trying to stay home and I can’t.”

Scheduling is probably going to be his only issue. If you’ll remember interviews with Kevin Feige during the rollout for “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” earlier this year, the Marvel studio chief said Hawkeye was one of the characters they wanted in the ‘Captain America’ sequel, but after including Black Widow and Falcon in the movie, the narrative felt too crowded for a fourth hero.

But Hawkeye getting his due in a third film in the same way Black Widow did in the second would certainly make sense. But it may all depend when that third film —due in theaters May 6, 2016— actually shoots next year. ‘Bourne 5’ is obviously going to be a bigger priority for Renner than playing a supporting character in ‘Cap 3.’ Maybe he can squeeze both in and it won’t be a problem, but presumably “Captain America 3” is still coming together at the script stage.

Meanwhile, were those Joaquin Phoenix as “Dr. Strange” talks unsuccessful? The latest rumors from This Is Infamous have “Boardwalk Empire” actor Jack Huston as one of the actors in the mix to possibly play the Sorcerer Supreme. The publication is the same one that said Jon Hamm was a serious contender for “Dr. Strange” earlier this year. And coincidentally enough, the “Mad Men” star just recently put that on blast as well.

“The funny thing about the internet is that you can have rumors go on about possible jobs and possible things that I had no idea about…maybe…I don’t know,” he told MoviePilot. “You know, it’s funny when the internet knows more about you than you do, but…maybe the internet was talking to Marvel, I don’t know. (laughs) No, I certainly wasn’t approached by (Marvel), but I do like Dr. Strange. He’s a very cool, cool character."

So perhaps Hamm was nothing more than a twinkling idea in Marvel’s eye at the time, which is often the case with wishlist reporting. We will say Huston’s a pretty great actor and already has the right look for the good doctor, so he wouldn’t be a terrible choice. Btw, here’s a new photo of Renner as Hawkeye on set with director Joss Whedon from "Avengers: Age of Ultron" from CBM.
