Jim Carrey Calls Dr. Robotnik The Real Star Of Live-Action 'Sonic The Hedgehog' Film

In a year that sees the Marvel Cinematic Universe turn the page on its massive 22-film story, Lucasfilm releases the final “Star Wars” film in the “Skywalker Saga,” Disney hits peak remake territory with a new “Lion King,” and Martin Scorsese finally releases his latest crime epic, perhaps the one film that could overshadow them all in sheer curiosity is the upcoming live-action “Sonic the Hedgehog.”

And as reported from yesterday’s panel at CinemaCon (via Deadline), the film, which sees the bright blue hedgehog team up with a human police officer to stop the evil Dr. Robotnik, is probably going to raise a few eyebrows from film fans and showcase what might be one of the oddest roles for actor Jim Carrey in his long career.

You see, Carrey plays the aforementioned Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik. And as you might guess, the character is completely ludicrous, and looks as weird as his name implies. It probably makes sense to hire someone like Carrey to tackle the role, right?

After showing the trailer to those in attendance, the actor took the stage with Paramount executive Kyle Davies to talk about the footage.

“I like to see you saved the best for last in the trailer, but this crowd deserves a real taste of what a real star vehicle is like,” Carrey said. “I am Dr. Robotnik, one of the most intelligent men who ever walked the earth. It’s basically my origin story.”

Of course, the actor said he was reminded, “Sonic is really the star.”

“Been there, done that. This movie is nothing without me,” joked Carrey.

As mentioned, “Sonic the Hedgehog” might be the strangest film to launch in 2019, and fans have already taken notice. When posters and images leaked online last year, people were freaking out over the design for the superfast, blue hedgehog, who looks more photorealistic than has ever been done before. And with the description of the footage shown yesterday, perhaps Paramount has yet to really show the weirdness that the film will unleash.

“Sonic the Hedgehog” hits theaters on November 8.
