With the COVID-19 pandemic creating chaos all around the world, in almost every business industry, there’s a lot of uncertainty with what the future might look like. And in the case of the entertainment industry, that’s definitely the case, with cinemas shut down and productions halted all around the world. Needless to say, it’s a weird time to be working on a film, which is echoed by filmmaker Joe Russo in a new interview about his upcoming film, “Cherry.”
Speaking to Comicbook.com, Russo, who co-directs “Cherry” with his brother Anthony, explained where the filmmakers are in the process of finishing the upcoming crime thriller. And while it appears they’re close to being done, it doesn’t seem like the film is necessarily close to being released.
“We’re in post,” Russo said. “We’ve been editing remotely with our editor. We’re just about to lock picture, and start music and sound on it so it’ll be ready in a few months. The question is, what’s the market going to be? Where are we going to be? When are movie theaters going to reopen? There’s a lot of questions that need to be answered before we release it.”
One thing that isn’t a question, at least in the mind of Russo, is how good star Tom Holland is in the film. According to the director, the ‘Spider-Man’ star turns in an awards caliber performance in his role as a military veteran that gets involved in opioid addiction and crime.

“I think it’s an Oscar-worthy performance,” the filmmaker said. “I think he is absolutely amazing in it. He gives a gut-wrenching performance. What he does to himself emotionally and physically is unbelievable. We haven’t seen an actor in a role like this in a while. The movie spans a decade, complemented by an epic performance. And one that I certainly hope will be in the Oscar conversation.”
With cinemas expected to reopen later in the summer, with new films possibly hitting in July or August, there’s plenty of time for “Cherry” to arrive on the big screen before Oscar season. However, it’s unclear whether or not Holland’s name will be in the discussion. Of course, the Russo Brothers do have a history of calling performances “Oscar-worthy” without really having much of a shot at landing an award, such as with Robert Downey, Jr’s role in “Avengers: Endgame.” So, we’ll just have to wait and see if Joe Russo is correct in his assessment or just overly enthusiastic. Either way, we’re psyched to see “Cherry.”
