Fans had been anticipating the arrival of Marvel Comics supervillain Mephisto for years, after he didn’t show up in “WandaVision” (despite the feverish rumors and theories spread by geek outlets), there was some understandable disappointment. Of course, the studio ultimately stuck the character and his cohort, The Hood, in the Disney+ show “Ironheart,” with British comedic actor Sacha Baron Cohen cast in the part.
Deadline is relaying a quote from Marvel’s Kevin Feige from a press conference where it was revealed that Mephisto is going to become a “prominent” figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe beyond the streaming side of the franchise.
Not a strange thing to say, as in the comic books, the character has been just as prolific as Thanos, Doctor Doom, or Loki, potentially making him a strong contender to eventually face The Avengers.
“Ironheart” featured the supervillain’s link to Anthony Ramos‘ Earthbound criminal The Hood, but the demonic soul-collecting cosmic entity, who has connections to the Elder Gods, has also crossed paths with heroes such as Thor, Spider-Man, Ghost Rider, Doctor Strange, Silver Surfer (first appeared in the third issue of the solo comic), and many others.
The character’s future is as bright as can be, given all the different places Mephisto could show up in the future, and with the studio’s sluggish push to mine the horror side of the comics after “Werewolf By Night.”
Seeing the baddie involved with projects like “Blade,” “Midnight Sons,” “Thor 5,” “Doctor Strange 3,” and if that “Ghost Rider” (Ryan Gosling has been campaigning for the part) project ever sees the light of day, wouldn’t be all that surprising. Previously, actors Peter Fonda and Ciarán Hinds played Mephisto in the two “Ghost Rider” movies starring Nicolas Cage when the franchise was at Sony Pictures.
Then again, he might be a fun character for Wade Wilson to interact with in“Deadpool 4” or whatever Ryan Reynolds is currently developing at Marvel.
